Traveling through Europe in 2024 brought a mix of excitement, discovery, and a few challenges that made the journey memorable. Starting with a smooth Delta Airlines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam, the trip unfolded with vibrant city explorations, scenic train rides, and relaxing lake cruises. Here’s a detailed account of the trip, highlighting practical tips and must-see spots that made this adventure truly unforgettable.

Starting the Journey with Delta Airlines

The trip began on August 23 with a pleasant flight from Detroit to Amsterdam aboard Delta Airlines. One of the perks of flying Delta is access to their airline lounges, which offer a comfortable space to relax before boarding. For frequent travelers, getting a Delta-branded credit card can simplify travel by providing lounge access and other benefits that make the journey smoother.

Landing in Amsterdam, I faced a slight jetlag but was eager to explore during an eight-hour layover. The airport itself is clean and well-organized, with an excellent system for storing luggage in lockers for just a couple of euros. This allowed me to leave my bags safely and venture into the city without the burden of heavy luggage.

Exploring Amsterdam During a Long Layover

Amsterdam greeted me with its typical weather—rainy but charming. Despite the drizzle, the city’s cafés and shops offered cozy spots to enjoy local flavors. I stopped at Pancake Amsterdam, a popular eatery known for its delicious Dutch pancakes. Sitting by the window, I enjoyed a scenic view of the city’s iconic bridges and boats gliding through the canals.

For those interested in history, the Anne Frank House is a must-visit. Tickets sell out quickly, so booking in advance is essential. The city also offers a lively bar scene and plenty of cultural sites to explore, making it easy to fill a long layover with meaningful experiences.

Flight to Zurich and Arrival Experience

The next leg of the trip was a short flight from Amsterdam to Zurich. If you have airline status or are willing to pay a small fee, the KLM airport lounge at Amsterdam Schiphol offers a comfortable waiting area before boarding. Zurich welcomed me with its clean streets and stunning views.

The hotel, Motel One Zurich, was a highlight. It combined cleanliness, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere with a smooth check-in process. Zurich’s streets are lined with beautiful cars and impressive architecture. The water bodies around the city are pristine, adding to the overall charm.

Discovering Zurich’s Attractions

Zurich Central Station offers more than just transit; it’s a gateway to sightseeing. Taking a ride on the local trams provides a great way to see the city’s highlights. One culinary highlight was visiting a raclette factory, where I experienced authentic Swiss cheese dishes that are a delight for any food lover.

Scenic Train Ride to Lake Como

Traveling from Zurich to Lake Como by train is an adventure in itself. The route through the Alps offers breathtaking views that make the journey as enjoyable as the destination. Lake Como’s small towns are full of charm, with plenty of eateries serving local cuisine.

I stayed at Alberto Le Due Corti, a cozy hotel that provided easy access to the lake and town center. One of the best experiences was a three-hour private lake cruise, which can be booked through platforms like Viator. This cruise offered stunning views of the lake’s villas, mountains, and peaceful waters.

Continuing the Journey to Genoa, Italy

From Lake Como, the trip continued by train to Genoa, Italy. This leg of the journey offered a new cultural experience with Genoa’s rich history, architecture, and vibrant food scene. Exploring Genoa’s narrow streets and harbor area provided a perfect end to this part of the European adventure.
